Hubert J. Santos

Hubert J. Santos founded Santos & LaLima, P.C., in 1974. 

He has been an active trial and appellate lawyer for over thirty years been engaged in the private practice of law in Hartford and has tried a broad variety of civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts, including white-collar criminal defense cases, trade secrets, personal injury matters, death penalty litigation and business disputes. He also has represented individuals and businesses during numerous state and federal grand jury investigations.


He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1969 where he was Lead Articles Editor of the Connecticut Law Review. From 1972 to 1974 he served as a federal public defender in the United States District Court where he defended complex federal prosecutions and regularly argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In 1978 he was appointed Corporation Counsel for the City of Hartford. Mr. Santos was appointed by Governor O'Neil as one of the original members of the Judicial Selection Commission in 1986, a position he held through 1993. From 1976 to 1986 Mr. Santos served as a lecturer in trial practice as a member of the adjunct faculty of UConn Law School. Mr. Santos has been a lecturer, panelist and/or moderator at numerous seminars and conferences sponsored by various bar associations, law schools, and other organizations throughout his entire career.


He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers as a Fellow in 1986 and he is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Since its inception in 1983, the publication Best Lawyers In America has recognized him as one of the outstanding criminal defense and personal injury lawyers in the State. Since 2006, he has been named a Super Lawyer in criminal defense. His peers have also rated him AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, their highest rating. In 1990, Mr. Santos was named by Connecticut Magazine as one of the five Best Lawyers in Connecticut, and again, in 2006, he was listed as one of the top ten lawyers in the State by the same magazine. In 1993, the University of Connecticut School of Law Alumni Association honored Mr. Santos by awarding him with the "Distinguished Graduate Award." In 2005, the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association awarded its highest honor to Mr. Santos by presenting him with the “Champion Of Liberty” Award. In 2019, he received the President’s Award for Excellence by the Hartford County Bar Association, recognizing that he “exemplifies the highest traditions of the legal profession, has performed significant services to the community at large, and exemplifies excellence and civility in his or her practice.”

Mr. Santos is a lifelong resident of Connecticut, and lives in West Hartford.

Trent A. LaLima

Trent A. LaLima

Trent A. LaLima is a partner at Santos & LaLima, P.C. He joined the firm in July 2013.

Trentrepresents clients on criminal and civil matters, including both federal and state cases. His experience at the Santos & LaLima, P.C. has included criminal cases involving murder, fraud, governmental corruption, white collar crime, home invasion, robbery, drugs, and sexual assault, among numerous other areas. He has extensive experience as trial counsel in criminal and civil cases, including major felony trials and high profile criminal cases. Trent has authored briefs for the Connecticut Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His experience also involves civil suits concerning personal injury, business disputes, and civil rights. Additionally, Trent is experienced in school/university disciplinary proceedings. 

Trent received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticutin 2010, and his juris doctor from Washington   & Lee University School of Law in 2013. He was admitted to the Connecticutbar in 2013. He is also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United  States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the federal District of Connecticut.

Trent’s professional associations include leadership positions with the Connecticut Bar Association and Hartford County Bar Association. From 2017-2019, he served as the Chair of the Young Lawyers Section’s Criminal Justice Committee and as a member of the Young Lawyers Section’s Executive Committee. In 2019-2020, he will be CLE Director of the Young Lawyers Section. From 2018-2019, he was the Secretary of the ConnecticutBar Association’s Criminal Justice Section. In 2019, he was named Chair of the Criminal Justice Section. Also in 2018, he was named to the board of the Hartford County Bar Association and as co-Chair of its Criminal Law Committee. He has presented or organized numerous legal education events, including presenting on a panel discussion “Defending Campus Sexual Assault Cases.” He is also a member of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association and the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
